I was lying in bed, listening to Alan Ginsberg talk about the open sound of the voice, the rhythm of a poem. He brought up William Carlos Williams, who experienced a series of strokes that affected his ability to create poetry with his typewriter. After the strokes it was easiest to type out his poetry in short pieces, with line breaks and incomplete returns for every pause. His style evolved to work that looked a little like this:
Inseparable from the fire
its light
takes precedence over it.
By working within his new constraints, he created a new art form for himself. What will I create?
