Speaking of Eating
June 22nd, 2008 by J. · 2 Comments
In July I’m going to place a large wholesale order for Just Tomatoes, Etc. Just Tomatoes is the company that makes those little buckets of bright-colored dried fruit and veggies that have a bit of a crunch to them. No weird ingredients, just fruit. Or veggies.
From quickly looking at the price list, it seems that wholesale pricing is about 40% off retail at Whole Foods or Central Market, sometimes much greater when buying in bulk. Woo! Shipping to me will be free and the order should arrive quickly.
These are kind of a deluxe snack, but they’re awesome for little hands (like Cheerios. But fruit. And yummier.) and last-minute backpacking trips a la Jack Kerouac and Gary Snyder climbing Mt. Whitney. They are possibly also good for those E.T.s allergic to nuts, chocolate and dairy.

Ode to the Red Onion
June 22nd, 2008 by J.
I said I would put this in my blog so I could remember it.
This poem could also have been called, "Ode to the Red Onion." During grad school we’d work long days in the woods, starting early and finishing at "half past dark." We’d emerge from the woods hot, ravenous and muddy.
The Red Onion was my favorite place to refuel and rest. It was civilized but not stuffy–nobody minded much our field gear, or at least pretended that they didn’t. The bathroom was the prettiest bathroom in East Texas (there were no such facilities of any kind in the woods!), a perfumed oasis adorned with silk flowers, delightfully clean. After informing the waitress of our destination, we’d walk over to the buffet line, a gastronomical Shangri-La. We’d laugh and dine on frahd okra, frahd fish, frahd hushpuppies, chicken frahd steak, and leave room for that chocolate goo at the end of the end of the line. The buffet line included a small salad bar with a selection of non- and low-fat dressings. What was the point?
Good memories, those days in the woods and the rich dinners after. Minus, maybe, the chiggers.

Texas poet R. S. Gwynn is a master of the light touch. Here he picks
up on Gerard Manley Hopkins’ sonnet "Pied Beauty," which many of you will remember from school, and offers us a picnic instead of a sermon. I hope you enjoy the feast!Fried Beauty
Glory be to God for breaded things–
Catfish, steak finger, pork chop, chicken thigh,
Sliced green tomatoes, pots full to the brim
With french fries, fritters, life-float onion rings,
Hushpuppies, okra golden to the eye,
That in all oils, corn or canola, swimToward mastication’s maw (O molared mouth!);
Whatever browns, is dumped to drain and dry
On paper towels’ sleek translucent scrim,
These greasy, battered bounties of the South:
Eat them.

Fill in the Blank
June 17th, 2008 by J.
We decided to take C&D to the beach Saturday afternoon. On the way to ________ David started laughing. "________ don’t ride in cars!" he said. "They ride in trucks and tractors. And horses."
There were no cowboys at the beach, just waves and some people.
And _______.
And water again. We stayed until almost dark and then Carmen ______ the whole way back to the car.
Answers: Galveston, Cowboys, sand, screamed (of course).
* * * * * * * * *
Yesterday we walked to UST, where David played in a planter that he has sort of adopted to use as a ________. Matt and I were ______ and talking so we didn’t notice he dug up half the thing in like, I don’t know, 3 seconds.
It hasn’t had plants in it since at least ______, and last time I sort of asked someone if we could play there (we asked a student at the student center; not too official, but nobody else was around at 7p on a random Tuesday, okay?), and she said sure, so I guess it’s okay, but, still. See the pic? That’s some serious earth-moving for a little kid and a garden trowel. We put all the dirt/sand back when we got ready to leave, of course.
We’ll have to reconsider our habit of keeping the stroller stocked with garden tools.
Answers: sandbox, eating, 2006
