Health Care Reform

May 6th, 2009 by J. · 1 Comment

A note from Matt.  David loves a good problem, and we liked his approach on this particular problem.  The role play was initiated by a discussion of the word “x-ray”, though he had clearly moved on from the concept by the time he spoke with his patient.

Have you ever had a medical experience like this one?

Patient:  I think I broke my leg.  Could you check the bone and see if it’s broken?

Doctor: Yes, I will.

Patient: It looks fine on the outside, but it hurts inside.  How will you check the bone?

Doctor: I will use a knife to cut off the skin, and then I can see the bone.  And then I will put the skin back with something sticky.

Patient: Like tape?

Doctor: Yes, tape.  (Walks off for a minute to consult with a colleague at the busy hospital)

Doctor:  I have an idea.  I will pull out some of the little hairs on your leg, and then I will look through the holes that are left after I pull out the hairs, and then I can see the bone!

Unscripted dramatization.  HMO Doctor played by David, Patient by Matt.  No actual leg hairs were harmed in the filiming of this political advertisement.

Moveable Alphabet

May 2nd, 2009 by J.

Yesterday Carmen found a board book in the cabinet.  It had magnetic pages and a box of magnetic letters affixed to the last page.  She insisted on using it that very moment.  I set out the letters and opened the book.  After copying the word “apple” from the book, she looked at the pictures and decided to spell on her own:

bol (ball)

lef (leaf)

weo (whale)

Then she gave David a turn.  Looking through the book, he spotted and spelled out “train” and “car”.

Earth to Mommy!  It’s time to settle down with the moveable alphabet
